X 5 QUESTIONS: AN INTERVIEW WITH MOWALOLA
catalog ref: SV7034
SKU: 010-SV70/34
After a great deal of anticipation from her initial announcement, last weekend saw MOWALOLA® debut their pop-up store in Brick Lane, East London. Open for just 3 days, the store displayed an abundance of items. T-shirts that read 'FREE MOWA' and 'I HAVE NO PERSONALITY' to various rings, belt buckles (even a few archived pieces), and of course their signature trucker hat. Whilst at the store, I sat down and briefly discussed a few things with the London-based designer...
Q. How did the idea come around for your 'Jesus' capsule collection?
It doesn't really have a name, but I just wanted to make some sh*t that was like vandalism, most of the stuff here is the 'Lola land' stuff and I had planned it. So, um, I feel like it was reflecting where I was mentally then, and throughout the years it's been so long, I feel my mood has changed.
Has it ascended to a much better place, is that what you mean?
Yeah, I feel like I'm always growing, always testing things, all the stuff I do is experimental. All of its just been fun, I haven't even done a runway collection in like three years.
Q. Have you ever thought about a physical flagship store? if so, is this a goal for the brands future?
You know I really--I never did and then my best-friend was like 'she's always saying it', and that was the first time I actually thought about it, and that was like 2 years ago. Now I actually do have a store so it's been like, I don't know, everything is really surprising and like...exciting. I didn't know I was gonna do it the other day, it just kinda happened.
But like when it goes with the flow it always happens for the best I guess.
Yeah, I really went with the flow this year, then I realised I'm at a place where I'm planning, but also going with the flow for next year too. Like a different level of freedom.
[VAMP ANTHEM starts playing]
I try to not say no to too many people...some side-quest sh!t.
What do you mean?
Like if they said there's an event here, we are doing this, do you want to come with? And I'll be like f*ck it, yeah...
Ohh, I was thinking the same thing when you just follow your gut, it leads you to where you wanna be, you find the people you f*ck with, find things you like. Take more risks, I feel like life is a gamble you need to gamble with sh*t.
Q. Music-wise you've collaborated with artists or friends such as Mechatok, Bby$lut, Lancey Foux, and Namasenda. are there any other artists in particular you would want to collaborate with?
Mmm...
I feel like there's one, but you can't tell me
[LAUGHS]I don't know, I love that Im working with Odunsi (The Engine)...I can't say there's really anyone I wanna work because I know I'm tryna just like play more with my music, actually find what I wanna do, like, my sound.
Hmm, honestly my style changes all the time so it really depends on what kinda b!tch I feel like on the day...I would definitely say a BUNDLE BAG.
One of the big ones?
The mini-inny and...I kinda wanna get into taking the big bag, feel like I'm tryna get used to having something so big like on me 'cos its like a whole outfit.
What would you carry in there like a load of...whatever?
Everything or nothing.
Q. We've seen you do a couple runways, like your graduate collection, is this something you look to return to doing at some point in the future?
Yeah, I'm actually gonna do a show next year...
With the leathers?
You gonna have to see boo-boo, you gonna have to see...
